“The act of educating, loving, respecting, listening, embracing, advocating for and assisting a women prenatally during labor, childbirth and after”
Doulaing
Before I talk about myself or post my thoughts on birth, mothers, the American healthcare system, feminism, families, etc., let’s first clear up a very important question.
What is a doula?
A doula is somebody who is totally focused on the birthing person. While doctors and midwives are focused on the biological needs of the person giving birth and their baby, the doula is focused primarily on the mental, emotional, and informational needs of the birthing person. While lovers and family members are concerned and/or nervous for the birthing person and the baby, the doula is focused on the emotional health of the birthing person.
A doula is someone who believes that every birthing person should be listened to.
A doula is someone who knows the birth plan of the birthing person, and helps that person stick to that plan as best as circumstances allow.
In short, a doula is someone who can provide mental, emotional, and information support, not just for the birthing person but also for that person’s lovers, family members, and friends.
